PLACES to visit & THINGS TO DO
Napier is a compact coastal city with a distinctive mix of Art Deco heritage, waterfront attractions, food and wine, outdoor activities and Hawke’s Bay scenery. The city centre is particularly easy to explore on foot or by bike. Some of the highlights include:
Art Deco Napier – Explore the city centre on foot or take a guided Art Deco tour to see the architecture created during Napier’s rebuilding following the 1931 earthquake.Marine Parade – A pleasant waterfront area for walking and cycling, with gardens, attractions, playgrounds and views across Hawke Bay.National Aquarium of New Zealand – Home to a range of marine life as well as kiwi, tuatara and penguins, making it particularly good for families.MTG Hawke’s Bay – Napier’s museum, theatre and gallery complex in the centre of the city, with a focus on arts, culture and regional history.Ahuriri – Explore the waterfront, marina and coastal walking areas around this historic part of Napier.Mataruahou / Bluff Hill – A popular spot for elevated views over Napier and its surroundings.Hawke’s Bay wineries – Napier provides an excellent base for visiting the region’s wineries and cellar doors and experiencing Hawke’s Bay’s strong food-and-wine culture.Cycling – Hawke’s Bay has an extensive network of cycle trails, making cycling a great way to explore the coastline, countryside and wider region.Day trips – Further afield, Te Mata Peak and the Cape Kidnappers gannet colony are two of the better-known Hawke’s Bay excursions from Napier.
Overall, Napier works particularly well for visitors interested in architecture, food and wine, relaxed coastal activities and sightseeing, with plenty to do within the city and several worthwhile excursions into the wider Hawke’s Bay region.

where to eat
Napier has a surprisingly diverse food scene, ranging from relaxed cafés and waterfront dining to contemporary bistros, international cuisine and winery restaurants. A recent local dining guide describes the scene as evolving and becoming increasingly diverse, while the city offers plenty of options across breakfast, casual dining and more refined evening meals.
Some notable places include Central Fire Station Bistro, highlighted in a 2026 local guide as one of Napier’s standout restaurants; Mister D, known for European and seafood-influenced bistro dining; and Hunger Monger, a popular New Zealand-style restaurant. Around Ahuriri and the waterfront, The Thirsty Whale and Milk & Honey provide more relaxed dining options. Napier also has strong international choices, including Kilim Cafe for Turkish/Mediterranean food, Faith Hope Love Malaysian Eatery, Indian restaurants such as Rasoi, and casual favourites such as Vinci’s Pizza.
For a distinctly Hawke’s Bay experience, nearby winery restaurants such as Mission Estate Restaurant and Church Road Restaurant combine dining with the region’s wine culture.
